‘Star Wars’ at the zoo, ‘Mad Max’ at the Orpheum and more local movie events

From the zoo to the Orpheum to the Prytania and elsewhere, summer movie series are in full swing throughout the New Orleans area. They top this week’s survey of off-the-beaten-path film events on tap for local movie fans.


Dinner and a ZOOvie: ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’Audubon Zoo.The zoo continues its popular outdoor screening series for summer. Next up: director J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” (screening starts at sundown, about 8 p.m., on Friday, June 17; gates open at 6 p.m.), starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Harrison Ford. For an additional fee, attendees can splash around in the facility’s Cool Zoo splash park from 6 p.m. until the movie starts. Animal exhibits will not be open for the ZOOvie event. Tickets for the movie only are $6 per person. Tickets for the movie and Cool Zoo are $12. Children under 2 are admitted free. Concessions will be available for purchase on-site, although attendees are invited to bring their own picnic dinner, lawn chairs and blankets. Orpheum Theater Summer Film Series129 Roosevelt Way.The century-old New Orleans landmark kicks off its new summer movie series, which will see a different film screening every Monday and Tuesday all summer. First up: director Richard Linklater’s 1993 coming-of-age comedy “Dazed and Confused” (7 p.m. Monday, June 20), starring Matthew McConaughey; and director George Miller’s Oscar-winning 2015 action film “Mad Max: Fury Road” (7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21), starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Admission to Monday screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis, with tickets being made available at the theater box office starting an hour before showtime and with proceeds from concessions sales benefitting the Tipitina’s Foundation. Tickets to Tuesday screenings are $6 and available online at the Orpheum website.
