Opening with a serenade of wind instruments, this program will begin with Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn, led by guest conductor Gemma New. Widely sought after for her dynamic presence, the audience will enjoy her insightful interpretations and innovative approach as she directs these romantic German classics featuring cellist, Lynn Harrell.
Harrell’s playing, which has been described by the Boston Globe as “bold, imaginative, and surpassingly sensitive …fully human and rich in detail,” will shine forth in Schumann’s Cello Concerto No.1 which moves from the deeply meditative to a brilliant and affirmative conclusion.
In closing, the audience will experience the cheerful and tranquil nature of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 – a work which has been compared to Beethoven’s 6th Symphony due to its almost pastoral nature.
